All participants are asked to arrive with an existing case they can use throughout the course. The goal of this workshop is to help therapists use polyvagal theory to refine their clinical reasoning and clinical skills for use with children who have sensory processing challenges.

This live intermediate level workshop in collaboration with Therapeutic Services, is designed for the experienced school-based clinician that is new to Polyvagal Theory, and provides the knowledge and skills to apply polyvagal theory in school settings. Through content, case study, and small group discussions, participants will explore and practice applying polyvagal theory to the IEP process for existing clients. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to and inform this emerging evidence-informed framework and walk away inspired and equipped with innovative tools they can apply immediately in their direct service, consultation or coaching work with clients to improve outcomes. Special topics to be covered include:

The nervous system, regulation and “adaptive behavior”

Polyvagal Perspectives on learning readiness

Trauma-sensitive considerations for school-based intervention

Window of tolerance as a new lens for supporting classroom performance

Using co-occupation and autonomic tracking at school

Thinking beyond sensory diets to build sensory supportive classrooms

Safe and Sound at School

 

This course applies to the following populations: Early Intervention (Birth – 3 years old), Preschool (3 – 5 years old), Elementary School, High School, and Adolescent

Kelly Beins, OTR/L

Kelly Beins is an accomplished and seasoned occupational therapist with 30 years of clinical experience. Kelly approaches her work with an intuitive, empathic, and playful style and her passion and success is in making life easier for people living with sensory integrative processing challenges. With Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Occupational Therapy from McMaster University, in Ontario Canada, Kelly’s dedication to her field has led her to pursue advanced certifications in sensory integration (USC, 2005), pediatric feeding difficulties (SOS, 2012), and listening therapies. Kelly now serves as the clinical solutions manger at Unyte Health, supporting organizations and teams of therapists to integrate applications of Polyvagal Theory. Over the lifetime of her career, Kelly has worked across the continuum of care in various clinical, administrative and consultative roles. She started and grew her own private practice and now has two published children’s books, has co-authored professional guidelines and training curriculum, was awarded “Autism Parenting Magazine” Top OT two consecutive years, and is a sought after international mentor and speaker.
