This six-hour course is geared for school-based therapists who support students’ learning potential and success. The topics to be covered include identifying retained primitive reflexes that are correlated with delays in vision skills needed for academic success. Participants will learn what primitive reflexes are, the signs and symptoms of abnormal primitive reflex activity, and the role primitive reflexes play in developing the vision skills used by students. Following the course, participants will understand how abnormal reflex activity interferes with visual performance in the classroom. Specific therapeutic interventions/activities will be highlighted. These interventions/activities can help students mature the neurological foundations needed to decrease abnormal reflex activity and improve basic functional vision skills used in the classroom. Students whose education is supported by these therapeutic interventions will benefit from spending less time coping with abnormal reflex activity so they can spend more time enjoying educational success.

Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:

  1.  Differentiate the core 4 motor components from the 6 represented sensory components of Neuro-Sensory Motor
    Model of Maturation that leads the development of vision skills, cerebellar functions, integrated sensory systems,
    perception, and cognition, as a foundation to efficient performance in activities of daily living (self-care, school
    performance, communication, etc
    2. Investigate the implications of the 4 subprocesses that Dr. AM Skeffington’s Model of Vision the Emergent has on human performance
    3. Elaborate on 3 commonalities of Jean Ayres’s sensory integration theory to Dr. AM Skeffington’s Model of Vision
    the Emergent and its impact on learning and behavior.
    4. Apply neurorehabilitation principles to impaired populations such as those with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and
    other neurodevelopmental disorders by addressing underlying client factors and performance skills, emphasizing visual and other sensory systems, to promote improved performance of childhood occupations across contexts.
    5. Practice 5 evaluation procedures to assess the integrity of underlying visual and vestibular systems to assist in designing intervention activities that address self regulation and facilitate engagement in occupation.
    6.Practice 5 specific intervention activities that can be applied in therapeutic settings that support functional vision skill development and engagement in occupation.

Patricia Andrich, MA, OTR/L, COVT, CINPP

Patricia Andrich, MA, OTR/L, COVT, CINPP, is an internationally acclaimed therapist, consultant, author, and inspirational keynote lecturer. She is well known for her work in vision development, sensory integration, and her model of NeuroSensory Motor Maturity. Patti is recognized for her success in helping others achieve improved vestibular, visual-motor, visual perceptual, auditory perceptual, and sensorimotor development. She has contributed to research in vision development and has published several articles. Patti received her master’s degree (1992) in education from The Ohio State University and her occupational therapy degree from Cleveland State University (1999). She holds additional certifications in vision therapy, reflex integration, auditory processing, and neurofeedback. She is a member of The Optometric Extension Program and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. Patti holds an advisory position on the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association and is also a review board member to the Optometry & Visual Performance journal. Patti is a volunteer member of the US EASI International Normative Data Collection Testers and holds positions on other advisory boards in the United States and in Asia.

Course Schedule

30 Minutes:  Introductions: speaker to introduce self and participants to share their goals for attending workshop

60 Minutes:  Discuss definitions of primitive reflexes, vision, and  recent research related to school-based therapy

60 Minutes: Discussion regarding evidence of retained reflexes in the school setting- participation

15 Minutes: Break

60 Minutes: Review reflexes and explain how they provide the neurological foundation to developing common skills needed for perception, memory, fine-motor control, thinking, reading, writing and coordination.

60 Minutes: Screening methods for identifying reflex activity

45 Minutes:  Break

30 Minutes:  Provide examples of possible IEP goals

90 Minutes: Provide demonstrations of therapeutic activities

15 Minutes:  Summarize learning and answer questions
