Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:
1. Discuss the make-up and purpose of the pelvic floor in the developing child.
2. Describe the connection between postural control and respiration in relationship to the pelvic floor.
3. Review screening tools utilized in identifying insufficient/sufficient use of the pelvic floor muscles related to postural control.
4. Discuss musculoskeletal impairments and compensatory movement patterns related to pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.
5. Learn treatment strategies to connect breathing and positioning to tap into the pelvic floor when outlining a gross motor strengthening program.
6. Identify “why my treatment is not working.”
7. Review case studies applying principles learned in class.

Tara Rudolphi, DPT
Dr. Tara Rudolphi graduated with a Doctoral Degree in physical therapy from the University of Iowa in 2009. She started her practice in orthopedics but soon discovered her passion for helping children. Tara has extensive experience in developmental delay/early intervention, Neurodevelopmental treatments (NDT), Traumatic Brain injuries, and bowel/bladder incontinence treatments. Prior to starting her own business, 2Empower Physical Therapy, Tara developed and grew the pediatric pelvic floor program at Genesis Pediatric Therapy Center in Coralville, IA to be a leading provider of voiding dysfunction treatments with families traveling from all over the state of Iowa. Tara published “The Effect of a Combined Pelvic Floor Muscle Training and Gross Motor Strengthening Program on Urinary Incontinence in school-aged Children with Typical Development: A Descriptive Case Series.” Tara has taught multiple courses and has presented her work at the National APTA CSM in Washington D.C. and was recognized with the Elaine Meadows Research Scholar Award presented at the Section on Women’s Health -APTA Awards Gala Program. Tara has since expanded her skillset and practice to help women through pregnancy and post-partum and beyond to overcome pain, incontinence, and regain abdominal and pelvic floor integrity. Her mission is to spread the word that our children are not defined by a diagnosis and no person needs to suffer from pain, constipation, and incontinence. Tara provides education and a multi-system physical therapy approach customized to your needs so you or your child can live their best life.

8:45- 9:00 am: What is the pelvic floor?
9:00- 10:00 am: How does respiration impact the pelvic floor muscles?
10:00 – 10:15 am: Break
10:15-11:00 am: Assessing your patient for pelvic floor dysfunction.
11:00 – 11:15 am: Client factors affecting toileting and bowel/bladder function.
11:15 – 12:00 pm: Treatment approach to effectively utilize the pelvic floor muscles.
12:00 – 12:45 pm: Lunch Break
12:45 – 2:00 pm: Strategies to tap into the pelvic floor to improve core stability.
2:00 – 2:30 pm: Identify “Why my treatment is not working?”
2:30 – 2:50 pm: Case presentation applying principles learned in class.
