A paradigm shift in clinical reasoning is occurring that affects pediatric therapists who are selecting the most effective interventions for their clients/patients. Interventions based on neuromaturational theory are being set aside in favor of those based on theories supported by current research. One such approach is the Perception-Action (P-A) Approach.* This interactive workshop highlights the roles of variability and adaptability in the global learning process. Keeping with research in developmental science, participants will gain the ability to modify intervention to be task-specific, exploratory, and highly salient to the child. The theoretical foundation, primary concepts, and unique characteristics of the P-A Approach will be described. Participants will learn strategies of environmental modification and Manual Guidance. Hands-on labs focusing on support surface contact, force distribution and an improved relationship between perception and action will be addressed. Participants will be able to integrate these strategies into therapeutic intervention both at home and in the school environment.

*The P-A Approach had its original tenets as TAMO™, created three decades ago by Ingrid Tscharnuter, PT, DPT, who had not only studied new theories related to development and neuroplasticity but applied them to a novel intervention approach.

This approach is applicable for all age groups. However, this course is more specific to Early, Intervention, Preschool and Elementary school ages.

Learning Objectives
Participants completing this course will be able to:

1. Distinguish between neuromaturational theory and current theories of perception-action, dynamic systems, and neuronal group selection.

2. Recognize how perceptual information from support surfaces contributes to the development of postural control.

3. Identify how a child-driven intervention contributes to an individual’s active problem solving.

4. Explain how environmental modifications can provide affordances for action.

5. Apply basic elements of manual guidance while working with another course participant.

6. Differentiate between manual guidance in the P-A Approach and other “hands-on” therapeutic techniques.

Patricia A. Gallo, PT, MA, is the owner of a private pediatric physical therapy practice in East Norwich, New York. She has over 30 years of experience in a variety of settings including school and hospital center-based programs, and Early Intervention. She is a founding member and past Secretary of the Institute for Perception-Action Approach. She is a Certified Perception-Action Approach Instructor and has presented courses on the Perception-Action Approach both nationally and abroad.

Ilene Sperling, MA,CCC/SLP, is a Certified Perception-Action Approach Instructor who  has specialized in working with infants, children and adults with movement, balance and coordination disorders and associated motor speech, feeding and respiratory/phonatory difficulties. She is highly regarded for her work using a body-centered approach integrated into intervention for cognitive, feeding and motor speech remediation.

Ilene has worked for over 40 years in a variety of practice settings. She is a Founding member of the Institute for Perception-Action Approach and is currently on the Board of Directors. She also holds Certification in Zero Balancing and Cranial Sacral Therapy and is PROMPT trained.

Ilene has presented many courses on the Perception-Action Approach, both nationally and internationally, with a focus on developing goals and intervention strategies for the Speech-Language Pathologist.
