Yoga and Mindfulness for School-Based Therapy

Allison Morgan MA, OTR, E-RYT

The increased prevalence of students with developmental challenges, mental health disorders, and trauma has greatly increased the need for therapists to become creative, innovative and more effective in their therapeutic approaches. The evidence-based practices of yoga and mindfulness provide highly adaptable solutions for meeting the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and sensory needs of pre-K through 12 students. These ancient practices have been proven to balance the nervous system, thereby supporting students to feel calm, organized and safe within their own body and mind. These are the most important foundational skills for all human beings to thrive. For many of our students, their states of anxiety, stress and overwhelm are so heightened that they are struggling to survive. Often the cause of the disruptive behavior that we are continually addressing is due to internal states of fight, flight or freeze and general feelings of being unsafe. This workshop will help you transform the clip charts and sticker incentive methods of behavior management.

Enjoy learning the power of teaching self-awareness and self-management skills through simple breath, movement and mindfulness activities that can be integrated into individual, group and inclusive classroom settings. You will find that these tools not only change the inner landscape for your students, but for you as well. We will explore the gift of your therapeutic presence and how it can shift the outcome of each session while also supporting your ability to be highly effective without becoming burned-out and drained.

Help your students develop self-regulation, attention and resilience while facilitating fun, flow, focus and function.
